What is SEO?
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) practically is the utilisation of marketing tools and techniques. Which endeavours to increase the quantity and quality of organic traffic to your business/website.
To gather a true understanding of what SEO involves that we need to visit the fundamentals...
- Quality of traffic: Your website can appeal to everybody on Earth, but if they're coming to your website because search engines such as Google tells them you're the best result for Marketing Agency when in fact you're an electrical engineer, that is not quality traffic. Instead you want and need to attract individuals who are genuinely interested in that products/services that you have to offer as these are the most likely to convert into a sale.
- Quantity of traffic: When you have established your website to have the right people clicking through from those search engine results pages (SERPs), more traffic is better.
- Organic results: Search Engine Advertisements take up a significant portion of many SERPs (As shown below). Organic traffic is the traffic to your website that you don't have to pay for. Win-win scenario for your cashflow right?
Monetising your SEO strategies
Make no mistake about it, if SEO marketing strategies are implemented correctly, they are a goldmine!!!
Even the most niche of businesses can become successful through search engine optimisation strategies if they can reach the peak of SERPs.
Saying this, brands that have the most attractive of offerings or the most innovative can instantly become complacent with their success. However, if their website is shambolic then reality can smack them in the face.
In brief, if you do not invest in your website, when the future is digital, then you are doomed for failure. If you do not innovate then you will die - it is as simple as that! Maybe not tomorrow. Maybe not next year but it will without doubt fail. If it doesn't fail then you will hit the ceiling and no expansion for growth.
I can say this because I have personally witnessed it myself. I have had clients whos online presence was non-existent and they wondered why they had high bounce rates and low conversions. As a result, we built them a search engine friendly website and BOOM instant growth.
Will this SEO playbook make my brand attractive and successful beyond my wildest dreams?
In all honesty, yes. Next question?
Okay, let me ellaborate...
It will take blood, sweat and tears... Not literally but the sentiment remains the same. Business owners and marketers often embark on SEO strategies half-hearted and often wonder why they are not reaping the rewards.
SEO is for the long-haul although it has the potential to be lucrative. The size of growth will become limitless and your bank balance will thank you!
It is without debate that Online Marketing, Digital Marketing and SEO matter more for brands that ever before. The typical consumer is placing a higher reliance on search engines to satisfy the consumer's decision making process. Consumer's are becoming even more fickle and are turning to search engines to seek trustworthy products and services.
So without further ado, let me introduce you to Marcon Consulting's SEO playbook and lets learn SEO strategies that work...
Erase website functions that slows it down
Website speed is a major influence on SEO performance.
Prior to changes made by Google within search engine optimisation, slow-loading sites could still rank high. I think we can all remember waiting ages for sites to load up.
Slow-loading websites really puts a dent into the user experience. You will end up making the user extremely frustrated. Swiftly making them disinterested in your product/service.
Research conducted by Strange Loop indicates that even a one-second delay in website loading time can result in a 7% loss in conversions.
We have to look at consumer behaviour, as you may well know. A slow site shows a lack of professionalism thus portrays the site being untrustworthy.
As I noted previously, site speed is a crucial and imperative factor when wanting to been seen on SERPs. eConsultancy acclaim that "40% of people abandon a website which takes longer than 3 seconds to load.”
On reflection, if your website is slow then you are playing a game that you will not win for genuine organic traffic. It doesn't matter if the content is of quality you will not rank. It is simples!
Refer to alternative relevant blogs and articles
You should be linking to external sites as a MUST!!!
.When I have taught SEO to clients they ask why? I understand the ideology that you are taking people away from your website and potentially a competitor.
However, Link building still remains a dominant aspect of search engine optimisation strategies.
Moz founder, Rand Fishkin, was quoted advocating the importance of implementing outbound links:
"Linking out sends trackable traffic, it makes your site a more valuable and scalable resource."
If you have read other blogs on Marcon Consulting or my personal domain. You would notice that we link to external sites that are trustworthy.
The rationale for this is as aforementioned. Link building is imperative for a successful SEO strategy and is a critical part of my SEO playbook.
Tailor your content to appeal to your target audience before tailoring to please search engines
This is one skillset that business owners, marketers and copywriters struggle to perfect. This skillset would happily satisfy old-skool SEO tactics.
Nevertheless, search engines have come a lot smarter since the old days.
When I read blogs, I notice one basic fundamental that isn't being adhered to.
That is the utilsiation of long-tail keywords. Where content curators opt to try manipulate search engines.
This is 100% wrong! Change this mindset ASAP!
Tailoring content to your target audience should be your salient priority. Not trying to satisfy search engine criteria.
Search engines utilise spiders that crawl through your webpages. However they don't hold any monetary value to your brand. Engage with the people who are looking to expend with their cash for your products/services.
So how do I tailor my content to put user experience first?
It is a question I get all the time for it is one that is so simple to answer...
When you are writing your content, forget that search engines are in existence. Rather curate content that is of value to your audience.
Approach similar niche websites to provide you with an inbound link
In all honesty, inbound links (backlinks) are still very relevant in improving your search engine positioning .
When your website receives dofollow and nofollow backlinks then you will reap the rewards that search engines can provide you.
What are Inbound Links?
Inbound links, or backlinks are basically a link that occurs between an external website to yours.
It is common knowledge that the more high quality backlinks that your website generates. The more likely that search engines believe that your website is the pioneer of great quality content that is of value.
The more inbound links to your website, the more search engines, such as Google believe that you’re providing great content. But it’s not really about the number of links.
As the saying goes, quality is better that quantity.
Thus meaning, have a few high quality inbound links are far more advantageous than many spam filled links.
What is a High-Quality Inbound Link?
Seeing as I have told you how quality is far better than quantity. I hear you ask so what is the definition of quality inbound link?
There is numerous aspects that decides what is a quality backlink, these are as follows:
- An Authoritative Website
In brief, an authoritative website is one that wields a reputation of creating content that is trusted by the mass of its audience. what makes an authoritative website. It’s simply a website that has a reputation for producing content that people trust.
- The Assortment of Backlinks
Many businesses already know the imprtance of establishing quality backlinks from authoritative websites. Nevertheless, they often do not understand how it is imperative to have an arsenal and array of backlinks.
When acquiring an assortment of inbound links to your website. You can be rest assured that you will be generating traffic from alternative sources.
- The Use of Anchor Text
Anchor texts are fundamentally the text that contains the link within. It is very popular when web develops want to avoid using an URL.
For example, if I was wanting to link to my personal website.
I could potential write the URL (https://www.marcuslangmaid.com) or alternatively I could use the anchor text 'Marketing with Marcus Langmaid'. This anchor text has got my personal website URL embedded within the text.
- The Anchor Text Description
The main beneift of anchor texts, that I personally like is that it gives the reader a sense of what the linked webpage is about.
When you are on a mission to seek inbound links from external websites. It is favourable that you obtain inbound links with an anchor text. The rationale for this is that search engines can crawl your website with ease.
The most desirable anchor text involve a keyword that attaches the website with the specific search term.
For example, Marcon Consulting offers Search Engine Marketing solutions for Small to Medium enterprises. Therefore, we would push that the anchor text involves a keyword such as 'Social Media Marketing Agency' or 'Social Media Marketing Services'.
Ensure your create relevant meta descriptions for every active webpage
Meta descriptions are one the most imperative aspects of this SEO playbook. The concept of meta descriptions is often neglected by web developers and marketers, which often shocks me.
When you appear in SERPs, the discovered webpage will show your meta description, as seen below. Therefore, you should exercise some effort in getting this right.
The rule of thumb by search engines is that they dislike content that gets copied or reproduced. If this a strategy that you use then you could find yourself being penalised by search engines.
This is similar when your meta description is duplciated.
I have seen websites that utilise the same meta description for a page about male trainers and male shirts. It does not take a brain surgeon to decipher that these topics are completely dissimilar.
It is pure laziness when a marketer copies and pastes a meta description from page to page.
You can’t have the same meta description for a page that talks about email marketing and a page on making sales. There’s a big difference in those topics and your meta descriptions should communicate that fact.
